Art Blakey Centenial Birthday Tribute

Art Blakey Centenial Birthday Tribute
Saturday: 11/30 8:00 PM
Art Blakey Centennial Birthday Sextet
Art Blakey was one of the major bandleaders in the history of jazz who helped shape and change the music. The list of alumni musicians who also became bandleaders and major stylists in their own right reads like a who's who of the jazz world. Some of the most notable: Horace Silver(Messengers co-founder), Clifford Brown, Lou Donaldson, Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Benny Golson, Wayne Shorter, Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton, Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, Kenny Dorham, Keith Jarrett, James Spaulding, John Gilmore, Reggie Workman, John Hicks, Woody Shaw, Johnny Coles, Bill Hardman, Chuck Mangione, James Williams, Valeri Ponomarev, Donald Brown, Junior Mance, Mulgrew Miller, Charles Fambrough, Billy Pierce, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Donald Byrd, Reggie Workman, Geoff Keezer, Benny Green,..you get the idea.

Most people think of the group he lead the majority of his career, The Jazz Messengers when they think about Art Blakey as a musician. But there was a lot outside of that group which he did. To celebrate the Centennial of Art's birth, NW based pianist Reuel Lubag has organized a Centennial Birthday Sextet to play not only some Jazz Messengers reportoire, but selections from several important records in the history of the music where Art was the drummer of choice for the session. There will be music composed by Monk, Horace Silver, Cedar Walton, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Timmons, as well as some standards. It will be a selection of some songs that aren't heard as frequently but are familiar to fans and serious students of the music.

Featured with Reuel(on piano) will be a stellar cast of some of the Pacific Northwest's finest and exciting players: Michael Glynn - Bass, Julian McDonough - Drums, Jared Hall - Trumpet/Flugelhorn, Andrew Glynn - Tenor Sax, Mark Taylor - Alto Sax. It's going to be a birthday celebration you're not going to want to miss.
